Excerpt:
To the next unfortunate possessor of this house:
As I approach the limitation of mortality, I surmise that it is imperative that I bestow upon you, the burden of which I am confident you will encounter. Therefore, I am determined to scribe the monstrosities that have occupied my mind and confounded my spirit these last several years. Dear reader, allow me to first assure you, and if not, persuade you later, where the world may appraise me mad, I am, at this juncture, upon the occasion of this narrative, well within the confines of sanity. For how would a mad man formulate the following text with any sense of believability? I am presumptuous that upon the completion of this account, you will agree with my assessment. For some lastingness, I have resided in this house afforded me by the passing of an eccentric uncle and being of youth and naivety, I laughingly thought I would restore this nearly condemned property and set forth with procuring within its walls, a family of my own. Never would I have pondered for a moment, the horror of what I was to encounter. It all originated innocently enough many years ago, but soon, I felt my intentions would not come to fruition. The clock, the hideous clock which ticks and tocks, the dreadful noise echoing distinctly throughout the home. Through excess of three generations, that dreadful timepiece has remained fastened in place, perched upon the wall and never once have I known anyone to coil its inner spring. As you can see, if you dare gaze upon it, it’s one of those ridiculous clocks fashioned to resemble the house in which it hangs, down to the minutest of details such as the gargoyles perched precariously upon the corners of the gabled roof. As the house has withered and decayed, the clock has diminished in its own appearance, following suit, almost exactly in every fashion. The gargoyles are sentinels from evil, yet what they hedge, the melancholy house, seems most evil of all. I have possessed that clock many years and for many a year, that clock has possessed me. |
